Songs of Praise

I sang with a chorus yesterday for a taping of a BBC religious show called Songs of Praise. Apparently, it was a law in England that a religious broadcast had to be done on Sundays for the edification of the nation so this show has been going on for 40 years, I think.

The star yesterday was a popular tenor named Alfie Boe, and after he sang, he was swarmed with fans wanting autographs and photos. He is starring in Les Miserables on the West End now. Here he is singing yesterday:

It was interesting to be a part of it all. It was sweltering since no AC is allowed because of the recording equipment being on. People were feeling faint, and they kept giving out water and telling us to drink copious amounts of it.

Everything was recorded out of sequence so we had to applaud madly over nothing, or show emotions for no reason. By the time I got out of the studios, I was exhausted and drenched with sweat. I don't see how television stars do this all the time -- oh, I guess for the money.

I'm really having trouble with the concept of "sweltering" in England. Also, we have recording equipment AND A/C in Phoenix with no dire results. Or is their equipment to antiquated that it's noisy and they might record the sound of the air conditioner?

I only heard of Alfie Boe about a month ago, and now he weems to be everywhere. Was he actually there at all while you were at the studio? What do you think of his voice? Is he opera or Broadway?

Hi D, this was filmed in George Martin's Air Studio - an old church renovated to become a recording studio so that must be why there couldn't be AC and recording at the same time.

I know it wasn't sweltering by Phoenix standards. I am a bit envious of your sun though -- we aren't having a summer at all.
