It is Anita's birthday today (I think she was one of the founders of the book club) so we had a cake and sang happy birthday.

The waiter brought cappucinos later and said they put the milk in as a heart because of Anita's birthday:

Non-stop rain in England. We went out to see the Christmas lights and shop a little after lunch but it was so wet and everyone's umbrellas were at war.

We got back home to Reading, wet but happy, then it was out to Wellington College to see a debate with Richard Dawkins and the Bishop of Oxford. The subject was whether atheism is the new fundamentalism.
Thousands of people were there to watch and learn.

It was a thrilling and electrifying event. I'd never been to a professional debate before. I'll put a video up of it later when it goes up on YouTube.
I think the line I'll remember most from the debate was when a Christian asked AC Grayling what the point of life was without God. He said that our purpose on Earth is to give meaning to other people's lives and to help one another.

E, those lights were bright weren't they (I'm sitting under the one in this picture)..
Anyway, your readers demand to know, who was your man of the match and how did you vote?
My husband got a migraine from those stupid lights. And a silly woman in front of us said she was going to write a letter to complain about the scrunched up seats, not enough room and the music they played before they debate was objectionable.
I'm still thinking about the debate. I voted Against the motion and loved Richard Dawkins best.
I'm still trying to count the heads and find you in the photo, Steve. I thought I saw you a minute ago.
E, Find the blond lady standing in the red coat (under the light) then track left to the (standing) man in black, my head is directly in front of his elbow.
OK, yes I see you now. That's who I picked out earlier too when you said you were 6 heads in from the light.
I think I did see you last night -- I should have been bowled and said something.
Oh well, maybe you'll be at the climate change debate in Feb?
What book is your book club reading?
"Book Club" they may have been at one time, but nowadays the main focus seems to be on eating and drinking.
When was the last time you all spent an evening discussing a book, Elizabeth?
Actually, a club that primarily focuses on drinking sounds like a very good idea. Sign me up.
Michigan Mom, I did suggest we give up all pretense at reading books and just become a social club. When that was vetoed, I suggested that we just read magazines or the National Enquirer before meetings but they laughed at that!
We can never agree on books, that's the prob. I don't even really like modern novels much, preferring non-fiction.
Read the Master and Margarita!
I couldn't get through the Master and Magarita -- I can't handle the surreal Russian plots -- people flying through the air -- that Gogol story I was reading the other day had the moon being snatched away by the Devil. I just can't get into that. I like Realism.
